Working out the DVRs

September 21st, 2006 Comments off

Survivor vs. Grey’s Anatomy at 7pm CDT: This appears to be the summary/season wrap for Grey’s kicking off to the 8pm premiere. So I think I’ll DVR the HD Survivor, then switch to catch Grey’s in HD at 8pm. Survivor is still a favorite of mine, and the gimmick of race relations, though it didn’t pan out last episode, will add some spice I think. Still trying to get the whole hidden immunity idol strategy to work, which hasn’t worked out for anyone very well in the past two seasons. It is candy… but I like candy!

Grey’s Anatomy Premiere: TV Tome has nice summary. When we left, Burke’s career hinged on getting his nerves back after getting shot. Issy had quit her residency after messing up Denny’s care, and Denny dying on Prom night. Hot steamy sex with McDreamy confuses Meredith more as she has to decided between the married McDreamy or the available vet Dr. wasshisname… This is the show to watch tonight.

Six Degrees Premiere: Now with Alias in the can, J.J. Abrams launches anew drama set in NY City (where else? some remote island in the Pacific Ocean… been there LOST that). So far all of J.J.’s shows have entertained me (though I never watched Felicity) so this will be one that hooks me too. The premise of six degrees of separation is something that he’s been exploring through most of his other work (Alias, LOST both have these types embedded in their stories) Looks promising.

Last night I DVR’d and watched Jericho. Interesting show, they can play this story for a while, as the people in the town wonder just how isolated they are, so far Denver and Atlanta seem to be off the map, Witchita might be next (the ex-gf was on the way to the airport when the bubble burst…) We have convicts loose in the area and the Sherrif is dead. The black-sheep has come home with still the big mystery of where he’s been all this time. So lots of threads to explore.

Focus of evangelism…

September 20th, 2006 1 comment

… is God, not the ‘convertee’

Read Dan Phillips‘ insightful (at least I think) post on the topic of “Doomed” Evangelism

Money quote:

Our focus in evangelism (I preach to myself, nice of you to listen in) must be the glory of God. Lift up the Lord Jesus, lift up His gospel, lift up the Cross, and God will be glorified. He may be glorified by converting our hearer; or He may be glorified in judgment. But either way, He will be glorified.

My mornings start out pretty much the same, I make a quick tour of some of my daily read blogs over a cup of coffee before I dig in and get to work.

Today’s path took me to some new places, first starting out a Hot Air and watching the Vent (WARNING: Political content… 🙂 )

Then I went to realVerse to watch that morning vlog (really, why watch morning news, when you can watch vlogs…)  I found realVerse from HotAir, and though realVerse is a weekly vlog, their content isn’t political, but more ‘spirited’.  Created in Nashville, realVerse spotlights some Christian/spiritual/cultural concepts in their brief overview of what goes on in the realVerse.  Today they featured a quick slice of an interview with Bill Seaver who blogs at MicroExplosion.

Clicking over there, I read a couple of his posts, and found a post announcing the launch of eBible.com.  eBible is a Web2.0 (who’s tired of THAT marketing term?) interface into Bible.  Offering free searches and commentaries (including some Nelson titles that I’ve liked in the for-pay Logos collection).  Also along the Web2.0 view it has a simple interface, and allows for community bookmarks and community building.  An interesting new way for bible look ups.  They even have a Firefox search plugin.  (They need to have a WordPress plugin, so plain ol bloggers can push people to their site… )

That is my morning (rolling up sleeves… )  Tell me a bit about yours!

Avast!

Last one, me pretties, I promise… And if ye kaint take the word of a Pirate, whose kin ya?

You are The Cap’n!

Some men are born great, some achieve greatness and some slit the throats of any man that stands between them and the mantle of power. You never met a man you couldn’t eviscerate. Not that mindless violence is the only avenue open to you – but why take an avenue when you have complete freeway access? You are the definitive Man of Action. You are James Bond in a blousy shirt and drawstring-fly pants. Your swash was buckled long ago and you have never been so sure of anything in your life as in your ability to bend everyone to your will. You will call anyone out and cut off their head if they show any sign of taking you on or backing down. You cannot be saddled with tedious underlings, but if one of your lieutenants shows an overly developed sense of ambition he may find more suitable accommodations in Davy Jones’ locker. That is, of course, IF you notice him. You tend to be self absorbed – a weakness that may keep you from seeing enemies where they are and imagining them where they are not.

A challenge to my ever-increasing blaaawg-family. Or family of blogs.

Garrick, has posted a number of topics at his blog Ministry Matters, and always leaves a time for ‘Your turn’ at the end of each thoughful post. I’d like to challenge my readers, and fellow bloggers to take the time to seriously reply to the questions he asks.

First, I’d like to also encourage Garrick in stepping out and blogging while also being a very busy minister in our church. His presence has challenged me, in a good way, to think a little deeper, and become more involved. I’d also like to congratulate his willingness to intentionally solicit feedback, it is tough to communicate effectively online, and tougher still to seek other points of view.

His latest post, An Audience of One, makes some provacative points, and one that might engage in a bit of ‘push-back’ from me, at some points. First I want to address his quesiton:

How do you deal with crticism[sic] from other people, especially those who seem to have plenty of things to improve themselves? What can you do to be more of an encourager to those around you this week?

The answer and more below the fold. Read more…
