I always go back to the sketch in Daniel's notebook (perhaps the ~ or a ~ "Real Constant", like "The Compass"?), which I admit I've never taken the time to "properly study," but there are lines drawn on it representing or depicting (as I recall) "imaginary time"(!). I have always wondered about that "concept" (if, indeed, one can fairly call a half-second glimpse of a mad scientist's sketchbook a "concept"...) and puzzled over its implications for (as you so aptly call them) the "Variables."

Then again, the last flash, as Locke fixes the off kilter wheel, he shifts to the far future 2007, and the rest go into the future to 1977 ... presumbably... since the only land mark is a complete statue, and we don't know when that was destroyed.

Note to self:

The Donkey wheel turns, equal and opposite push. Ben turns the wheel and ends up in the future (October 2005) while the island goes back into the past (when the drug plane crashes).

Locke turns the wheel, island goes back to 1977 (from where ever they were) while Locke goes forward to 2007.
