My S.H.A.P.E. is round…

Yesterday, our pastor invited me up to the pulpit/cafe table to have a little discussion.  It was preplanned, so it wasn’t like I didn’t know about it, but the only thing I knew I’d say that morning was my opening line of humor. It went a little something like this:

image Pastor, I’ve been thinking about what I was going to say when you asked me to join you.  I’ve been studying S.H.A.P.E. and spiritual gifts for a while, and so I’ve been investigating what exactly is my SHAPE, and then this morning while I was shaving, it came to me.  My S.H.A.P.E. is round.

It got the good laugh I was hoping for, so the rest of the time I just spouted off what came to mind, and I hope it made some sort of sense.  The morning was enjoyable, with encouragement from my Sunday School classmates, and later from my wife.  I borrowed a bit from the skit that was performed during our worship selections, as I told a semi-biography and not knowing what my spiritual gift was until I started being a real-live grown up church member, and then my gifting became apparent.

A mix of teaching (which is really a love of studying) with a bit of prophesy (truth telling) is where I feel the Holy Spirit using me the most.  I pray that it edifies and builds up the body when I open my mouth, and words come out.  Because sometimes, before that mouth opens, I have no idea what I’m about to say.

Same thing happened at small group last night, when the DVD stopped playing, and I jumped up (not literally, didn’t want to shake the foundations of the house) and started expounding on Spiritual Gifts… but that is another post.

Da Bunny… Redux

Out of the desert of the Middle East, is rising a new Chocolate Bunny… take it away Yahoo:

image The Burj Dubai tower is now 555 metres (1,831.5 feet) tall and has surpassed the 553-metre- (1,824.9-feet) CN Tower in Toronto, Canada, which held the record for the world’s tallest free-standing structure since 1976, developers Emaar Properties said in a statement.

The statement did not reveal the tower’s final projected height or its final number of storeys, which Emaar has kept secret since launching the project in January 2004.

The developer announced in July that Burj Dubai, Arabic for Dubai Tower, had exceeded Taiwan‘s Taipei 101 which is 508 metres (1,676.4 feet) tall, to become the tallest building in the world.

and for your information, the Burj Dubai Tower can now be seen from a distance of 57 miles (49 nm). No news on any planned gold plating.

YouTube is Accepted…

The other night, I watched the movie Accepted.  Its a teenage centered flick about a bunch of kids that couldn’t get accepted at mainstream colleges so they fake a college acceptance letter from a fake school, then in order to keep from being discovered build a school (South Hampton Institute of Technology … *smirk*).

image They end up having a big white board installed where the students can write what they’d like to learn this semester.  And it up having a high old time doing what every other college seems to do (i.e. party, drink, dance, play loud music…) and find out they learn something in the end.

Quoting the movie’s climatic speech by Bartleby (Justin Long, aka I’m a Mac) during the fake schools accreditation hearing:

…But out of that desperation, something happened that was so amazing. Life was full of possibilities. A – and isn’t that what you ultimately want for us? As parents, I mean, is – is that, is possibilities. Well, we came here today to ask for your approval, and something just occurred to me. I don’t give a s#!t. Who cares about your approval? We don’t need your approval to tell us that what we did was real. ‘Cause there are so few truths in this world, that when you see one, you just know it. And I know that it is a truth that real learning took place at South Harmon. Whether you like it or not, it did. …

Pure dreck.. but in a fun and entertaining kinda way.

In a truth-is-stranger than fiction story, Yahoo News has this article:

Pitzer College this fall began offering what may be the first course about the video-sharing site. About 35 students meet in a classroom but work mostly online, where they view YouTube content and post their comments.

Class lessons also are posted and students are encouraged to post videos. One class member, for instance, posted a 1:36-minute video of himself juggling.

Jeez, where was this course, when I had to learn FORTRAN from Mech E?

With apologies to Mr. Cooper…

No moreGrab your pencils
No moreGrab your books
No more teacher’sDon’t give your teacher dirty looks

Well we you’ve got no class
And we got no principlesWave ‘Hi’ to the Principal
And we<you’d got no better have innocence
We can’t evenYou’d better think of a word that rhymes

School’s out in for summer winter!
School’s out IN forever

(orig lyrics)

Now, if someone could please do something about the traffic, thanks.

Honor Thy Parents

I’m speaking tonight (on a whim) at the closing of our church’s youth camp. It has been a series of evening activities, culminating in this night. Tacky Night. Topic of the person that I’m stepping in for: ‘Touching the lives of your Family’, with the tag line – Christians are hard on their families.

Well yeah.

There was also some discussion on focusing it on how teens can bless their families, particularly their siblings, by not being selfish, but be generous.

So I look to the biblical texts to find some great examples of sibling generosity.

Practically a null set. From Cain and Abel to John and James (the sons of Thunder) there is a dearth of sibling kindness to each other. Jesus’ parable of the Prodigal Son is the hallmark of selfish behavior, with both the wayward and the homebody brother being entirely selfish. So what can I point to to show a clear instruction, where is the point where I can hammer home the point of sibling good will?

I think I’ll turn to the fourth commandment. Indeed the one that Paul says comes with a blessing.

“Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the Land the Lord is giving you” (Ex 20:12)

The longest relationship we’ll have while living might be with our siblings. Some of the memories I have of family reunions are of siblings getting together to honor their parents. Then after the parents are gone, some siblings continue the tradition, in honor of their parents.

It is odd that a similar command to love ones children isn’t on the big ten list of commandments. Perhaps because that is part of us, to love our children. Each individually, as a singular expression of ourselves. And corporately as part of the larger organism we call family. Many of my audience tonight will be youth, those preparing to make the leap into adulthood, leaving the nest. With that time in life comes a natural friction, a yearning to leave our parents, and strike out on our own. How can they possibly do that, and still honor their parents? For kids and teens still in the home. You know the sullen and bershon teens that are slowly withdrawing, wanting to be grown up, but to young to be able to. How can they honor their parents?

Love the ones the parents love. Serve the ones the parents serve. Love your brother/sister as you would love yourself. I think that act of unselfishness, putting our siblings before ourselves, is the strongest act of love we can show our parents.  One that at age 39 and a half, I know I need to improve.

New Foxhole Podcast

foxhole.pngA new John from Cincinnati podcast is out from Jay, Chris, Mark and Justin at the Foxhole Podcast site. Also they started a message board (see link in the sidebar) where lots of JFC conversations are being bandied about.

The podcast is well produced, and the discussions on the podcast are very enlightening. I think their production is much like Lostcasts podcast (LOST), or the 10th Wonder podcast (Heroes). In this format a discussion focusing on a popular television show is a great way to understand some of the finer details of a show.

While John From Cincinnati only has two episodes left in this season (and hopefully will be picked up for another season.. please HBO) the Foxhole guys are going to keep podcasting, starting over with Deadwood, season one episode one. The hosts are big David Milch fans, and their commentary regarding his dramas will be time well spent.

Thanks for the shout out on the podcast guys!

Give the Rangers a broom…

The cellar dwelling Rangers, swept the AL West second place Mariner’s adding another day of no-joy in Mudville for the Seattle faithful. Five sixths of the Stueve clan was in attendance whooping it up in section 318. (Lauren had youth camp to attend, and she ate too much Pizza, and too much ice cream, but had a lot of fun).

The Missus has a post up with pics and a description of dealing with bershon tween Brenna, who took many of the pictures in the flickr set (click the photo to see all the shots…)

Special note on this picture taken by Angie:

I am smiling! There on the left side, is Ramon Vazquez swinging on the game winning shot in the bottom of the 8th. Relief pitcher Joaquin Benoit owes Ramon about a case of beers, after giving up 3 runs in the top of the night, Ramon saved his bacon with his two-run dinger, after Marlon Byrd led off the eighth with a single and got to second on a sacrifice bunt by Frank Catalanotto. The game winner was a the expense of the M’s relief ace J.J. Putz (oh how HE must’ve hated High School).

It was a fun night in Arlington.

Hally-Lou-YEAH!

Just heard from my Property Manager that our house in Ingleside is RENTED!

Whoop!

These past three months have been a large burden, and really put a hold on my zeal for adhering to a debt reduction plan, because we frankly couldn’t afford it and the extra burden of the mortgage for the rental.

But still since the beginning of the year, we’ve paid off both of our cars, and have been blessed by family donations to be able to send my eldest daughter to mission in Mexico, and my second daughter to a fun summer school.  So we ain’t doing to bad… Thanks to all for the prayers and wishes.
