On Schedule Tonight

If my words are your words, can you hear my father? – John from Cinncinati

Since y’all admit to not watching ‘my shows’, I’m gonna give you notice in advance. Please study well, there will be a test. On tap for tonight, time willing:

  • Beauty and the Geek – The CW 7PM
  • House – Fox 8PM
  • Reaper – TheCW 8PM

You’ll need to have a dual tuner or two DVRs to keep up on your homework. Late work will be accepted if you need to access alternative viewing means.

image I watched the Pilot for Reaper Saturday night, and I was impressed. The premise is a slacker guy Sam (Bret Harrison)works at The Work Bench (a spoof on The Home Depot) finds out his soul has been sold to the Devil. Upon turning 21, the Devil (played wonderfully by Ray Wise) lets Sam in on the secret, and because of the over-crowding problem in hell, wants Sam to help him track down and send back the damned that have escaped hell.

Though nothing like Dead Like Me, the dark reaper comedy works well, though the reaping reminds me of Danny Phantom. Not entirely a willing servant, Sam decides to do the devil’s bidding to keep the devil from taking his Mom. Sam’s group of friends are funny, Sock (Tyler Rabine) is his irreverent best friend, and he has a crush on Andi (Missy Peregrym – was shapeshifting hero last season)

Each week’s plot will be the tracking and capturing the escaped damned, and depositing them in a portal (which ca be identified as any place like ‘hell-on-earth’, like the DMV). Also Delores from DLM makes a great cameo, on the other side of the reaping fence.

I’m watching it, you should too.

    Thursday – 5WoL

Try to do these as they happen, so I don’t get too behind. If I have more drivel to type, I’ll put it below the fold. Slow night last night, watched half of Big Shots, then all of Grey’s need to catch up tonight on the others, and I’ll update the post later.

    • Grey’s Anatomy: Grey sisters exchange furtive flances* glances flances**
    • Big Shots: Four Guys admit they’re wimmin***
    • Survivor: Amanda’s fun bags get blurred
      • Alt: Ashley’s fun bags are out!
    • The Office:  Michael is a little stitious

*- typo. Egad, I have no idea what a flance is, and I’m not sure ABC can show a flance without causing the censors to have heart-attacks.

** – it seems I’m more ‘down wit it’ than I had first thought, after googling flance, and reading the defizzle, the word is apropos. (I may have to go wash up now…)

*** – oh and before you ask, yes it is a word, and it too is apropos. :p

TV Premiere Week – Synopsizes in 5 Words or Less

I’m backing up to Survivor of last week, and I think I’m current with what I want to watch, so hang tight, here we go.

    • Survivor:China – Passive Aggressive Chicken Dumped – Woo!
    • Chuck – Awesome, Chuck wears Chucks! Cool!
    • Heroes – Hiro becomes his own Hero.
    • Journeyman – Redemption in a tool box.
    • House – Guitar Hero searches for bandmates.
    • Beauty and the Geek – Tony is not a Rapper
    • Kid Nation – PETA, help us promote show!
    • Bionic Woman – I knew Starbuck was Cylon!
    • Private Practice – Addison nekkid and under worked.

Others that I haven’t watched, but might keep on the back burner in case one of these shows gets Daybreak’d: Reapers, Life.

Up for tonight: Survivor, The Office, Grey’s Anatomy

Beauty and the Geek – Its a diamond in the rust.

Last night was the two hour season premiere of Beauty and the Geek (season 4).

In the first our, It got the whole AI national tour looking for prospective geeks.  Last year’s surprising couple Nate and JennyLee made some of the tour spots, and helped to interview the prospective cast members.  One funny moment was their initial stop in Arkansas… Jenny Lee filing her nails with a CW branded nail file, outside with a totally empty line, and Nate just hanging out waiting for someone to show up.  (eventually they did find a cast member in Arkansas, Shay… not surprisingly she was the least smart of the beauties)  One thing I like about the show, is that it doesn’t take its self too seriously.

Looks like we’ll have a great bunch of geeks and beauties, with one surprise coupling a girl geek and a male beauty that were a surprise to everyone else.  They were matched by the producers, and the male will compete with the rest of the beauties in the ‘intellect tests’ and the girl will compete with the rest of the geeks in the ‘pop culture’ inspired challenges.

Should be a fun season, be sure to watch Tuesdays on The CW

    New Foxhole Podcast

foxhole.pngA new John from Cincinnati podcast is out from Jay, Chris, Mark and Justin at the Foxhole Podcast site. Also they started a message board (see link in the sidebar) where lots of JFC conversations are being bandied about.

The podcast is well produced, and the discussions on the podcast are very enlightening. I think their production is much like Lostcasts podcast (LOST), or the 10th Wonder podcast (Heroes). In this format a discussion focusing on a popular television show is a great way to understand some of the finer details of a show.

While John From Cincinnati only has two episodes left in this season (and hopefully will be picked up for another season.. please HBO) the Foxhole guys are going to keep podcasting, starting over with Deadwood, season one episode one. The hosts are big David Milch fans, and their commentary regarding his dramas will be time well spent.

Thanks for the shout out on the podcast guys!

    John from Cincinnati

jfc.pngAs the spring television season wound down, I was wondering what would capture my attention for periodic television watching over the summer. We decided to order the movie package from Verizon FIOS, as we thought it might be cheaper than pay-per-view and blockbuster late fees. With that package came HBO.

I’d heard rumblings from TVSquad about this new show, John from Cincinnati, that was made from the producers of Deadwood (which I’ve never watched, but heard it was very good) so I made a point of watching the first episode about this guy that shows up in Imperial Beach, California and starts to work/observe positive changes in a circle of relationship surrounding a very dysfunctional family of surfers.

That synopsis doesn’t give the show justice. I’m really liking the show, and have become a fan of David Milch, the creator of JFC and Deadwood just from the concepts portrayed in the show. But, word of warning, this is a show on HBO, and as such, the language and themes are not what you’d find on the networks. Both in a good a bad way, perhaps. If you pale at the use of strong words starting with ‘F’, then you’ll probably be put off by the show. A word of advice, the language is there for a reason, and the advice from Milch is watch the actions, don’t listen to the words. And after hearing that and re-watching the episodes, there is some real gems and some great acting.

The great thing about HBO is that there are lots of options for watching the show, it airs at many times, and it is available on VOD. But for now, I’ve got the HD version of it airing Sunday night locked in on my DVR. Though I have to find alone time to watch it, since Angie doesn’t care for the language, and it probably shouldn’t be heard by the kids either. Also, it being on HBO, the amount of people I know that might watch it is reduced as well.

It is hard to describe the amount of wonder, confusion and then satisfaction I get from this show. It has taken its time in setting up the stories the show will tell. The characters aren’t always likable, or ever do or say the right thing. The themes are redemptive in nature, oddly reminiscent of some themes from The Shawshank Redemption (a wonderful movie… go watch it).

So while my water-cooler talks with friends might not occur about JFC, there are a few online places I can turn to: wiki, podcast, forums, blog and more blogs. What about you, do you watch John from Cincinnati?

    Totally Called It…

Well I didn’t call that our next American Idol would be Jordin Sparks, but DialIdol certainly alluded to that despite our desparate dialing for Blake that upped his votes by something around 500, yer welcome B-man.

I’m talking about LOST.  Totally called that the finale would be all on-island flashbacks.  I won’t go further in case you haven’t watched, and don’t want to be spoiled.  But for me, it was worth staying up until 2am.

What am I in college?  Totally Feeling IT too.
